Ebook About
"The End of Men is a fiercely intelligent page-turner, an eerily prescient novel, at once thoughtful and highly emotive." --Paula Hawkins, #1 internationally bestselling author of The Girl on the TrainSet in a world where a virus stalks our male population, The End of Men is an electrifying and unforgettable debut from a remarkable new talent that asks: what would our world truly look like without men?Only men carry the virus. Only women can save us all. The year is 2025, and a mysterious virus has broken out in Scotland--a lethal illness that seems to affect only men. When Dr. Amanda MacLean reports this phenomenon, she is dismissed as hysterical. By the time her warning is heeded, it is too late. The virus becomes a global pandemic--and a political one. The victims are all men. The world becomes alien--a women's world. What follows is the immersive account of the women who have been left to deal with the virus's consequences, told through first-person narratives. Dr. MacLean; Catherine, a social historian determined to document the human stories behind the "male plague"; intelligence analyst Dawn, tasked with helping the government forge a new society; and Elizabeth, one of many scientists desperately working to develop a vaccine. Through these women and others, we see the uncountable ways the absence of men has changed society, from the personal--the loss of husbands and sons--to the political--the changes in the workforce, fertility, and the meaning of family. In The End of Men, Christina Sweeney-Baird turns the unimaginable into the unforgettable.

Book The End of Men Review :

What’s worse than COVID-19? How about a worldwide plague outbreak that kills 90% of all males — but spares the entire female population? Told through the first-person accounts of regular people as well as scientists, doctors, politicians and public health officials naturally, almost entirely women, this novel the rawest grief of those who lose husbands, sons, fathers and brothers as well as the fear of those who know that the same fate will soon strike their loved ones. It examines the ineptitude of bureaucrats, and the unwillingness of the people (almost entirely men) to believe the female doctor who discovers the illness and realizes its implications. All is not lost, however. Life goes on, and the book covers the healing and rebuilding processes as well. In doing so, the book examines how the social and political differences and relationship between the sexes are changed. This is one of the best (post)apocalyptic novels I have ever read. I took out the library book and before I was a third of the way through I bought a copy for my Kindle library. The characters are real and utterly credible, the science convincing, and the plague scenario both too familiar and so much worse than Covid. I’d put this book right up there with Station Eleven, which is the most glowing praise I can give.
I wanted to love this book and was certain I would. But I slogged through it. The topic is a good one, and incredibly prescient considering the author wrote it before our global pandemic. However, every chapter is written in the first person by a different character. There are many, many characters and these characters are simply not distinct enough to remember or feel any connection to, so reading just becomes an issue of wondering if this chapter is a returning character or a brand new one. Around halfway through, one character, an anthropologist, begins documenting all these surviving women’s stories... why not frame the entire book as her documentation so the reader had some character as an anchor, some guide through the story?!? As it is, it feels like a bunch of newspaper clippings about a pandemic written in the first person by each journalist. Lots of interesting facts, little connection to character.
